Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
